A Different Side Of Kenya: Nairobi And Mombasa
Kenya is a famous holiday destination for its incredible safari experiences. However, the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa also offer something just as rich and rewarding for those travellers looking for something a little bit different from this vibrant country.
Kenya is served by two international airports, Moi International Airport in Mombasa and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Seeing as most travellers will be flying into one of these cities, it’s worth taking a couple of days out of your trip to have a look around and experience how the majority of people live in modern day Kenya.
Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and is the country’s largest city with around three million people living in and around it. It is regarded as Africa’s most prominent and political cities and is a hub for business and culture. Divided into eight constituencies, Nairobi is interspaced with many parks and open spaces. The country’s first national park, Nairobi National Park, is also situated just outside of the city (around four miles). The park boasts a large and varied collection of wildlife, such as African buffalos, black rhinoceroses, cheetahs, lions and Masai giraffes. It’s quite a sight to see all these incredible animals with Nairobi’s modern skyline in the background.
Nairobi is a very cosmopolitan and multicultural city with a growing literature and film scene as well as a being the centre for Kenyan music. The capital is also East Africa’s sporting centre and boast a number of stadiums, including a 60,000 seat venue – Moi International Sports Centre. The sports centre also has a 5,000 seat gymnasium and 2,000 seat aquatics centre. There are also many golf courses around the city and horse racing at the Ngong Racecourse in the city centre.
It is worth noting that Kenya suffers from a lot of poverty and AIDS is a big problem in the country. This is especially prevalent in the Kibera slum in Nairobi. Nairobi has gained a reputation for a poor crime rate and although this is mainly a problem in the poorer areas of the city it is worth being aware of if you visit and to take the necessary precautions when you travel around.
For a different kind of Kenyan experience, it is worth visiting the port of Mombasa. The second largest city in Kenya, Mombasa is the centre of Kenya’s coast tourist industry. Mombasa itself is centred on an island in the Indian Ocean, but extends to the mainland and is connected by a number of bridges and ferries. As well as the many beautiful beaches, Mombasa also attracts a number of visitors because of its exotic old town. Its winding, narrow streets are filled with Arab architecture, busy markets and bright colours.
However you can’t talk about Mombasa without mentioning its beaches — and what beaches they are. Many describe this city as having some of the world’s best beaches and they have taken full advantage of this statement, with many beachfront hotels scattered along the coast as well as deep sea fishing trips, scuba diving and watersport activities.
Mombasa also has a vibrant nightlife with many clubs, cinemas, pubs and casinos to keep you entertained. There are also many types of restaurants serving goods from across the globe. Seafood is also abundant and can often be eaten within hours of being caught.
Mombasa and Nairobi offer something a bit different for Kenya holidays and are definitely worth a visit on your way to your safari lodge.
